Year 5 - Spring Term - Gymnastics & Hockey

Year 5 have explored new avenues this term in hockey and have shown a strong commitment to developing their knowledge and understanding of the game. Students have taken on additional responsibilities, including umpiring, which has helped them develop a deeper awareness of the rules and improve their ability to observe and respond to game situations. They have worked hard to recognise and utilise the strengths of each member of their team, while continuing to develop their dribbling, shooting and trick skills. Through this, they have begun to think more tactically and strategically, learning how to read the game and make effective decisions during play.

In gymnastics, Year 5 have also grown in confidence when working with a wider range of apparatus, including frames, beams, bars, benches and tables. They have used this equipment to structure and choreograph sequences creatively, rotating and building upon their existing knowledge of balances, jumps and rolls. Students have also explored different forms of travel, linking movements smoothly and demonstrating increased control, creativity and fluency within their routines.

Overall, Year 5 have made excellent progress this term, particularly in adopting a more strategic and forward-thinking approach across both sports. They have shown maturity, resilience and a willingness to challenge themselves in two demanding areas of physical education. They have also shown great resilience and adaptability when taking part in alternative activities, particularly when the weather has not been on our side or when changes to room availability have been necessary. Great work, Year 5!
