What is Scandinavia?

Image
This week, the children were introduced to the topic of Scandinavia. They identified the new vocabulary they will be using whilst discussing and evaluating evidence.  The first part of the lesson the children identified the three countries that make up Scandinavia. These include Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Some of the children thought Iceland and Finland might be part of it but they are only Nordic countries.  The children then looked at different pictures of the countries to see what the landscape is like and the climate.

French: planning a route

Year 5 revised directions and places. They then practised following written directions, marking out a route. After that they drew  different places in on a map, plotted out a route from their home to school and then had a go at writing the directions for their route.

Vaping

This week, the children were really engaged in the discussions about smoking and vaping.  They debated whether it was safe to smoke or vape and why people may choose to.  Miss Amor then passed out some resources ( brown lungs) as well as a prop showing how the lungs work. Then,  they looked at how addictive nicotine is and how it can be hard to give up.  Using a newspaper, the children chose a section of it to answer questions.

Fractions again

Image
We are nearing the end of fractions and we are so proud of the resilience shown during this topic. This week the children have been honing their skills converting fractions so they have common denominators to be able to add, subtract or compare fractions. Furthermore, they have just begun to add mixed fractions and they smashed it.

Stewardship

Image
What an interesting lesson looking at what stewardship means to us and Muslims.  First, the children looked at what the word precious means to them and how they look after precious things. Then they debated whether they should tell a parent if they broke  a precious item of theirs. Some very interesting answers!  Then, they watched a clip explaining how Christians and Muslims believe the world was created and why Muslims believe they need to be stewards of the Earth. The children then talked about different ways they could look after the Earth.

Year 5 - Spring Term - Gymnastics & Hockey

Image
Year 5 have explored new avenues this term in hockey and have shown a strong commitment to developing their knowledge and understanding of the game. Students have taken on additional responsibilities, including umpiring, which has helped them develop a deeper awareness of the rules and improve their ability to observe and respond to game situations. They have worked hard to recognise and utilise the strengths of each member of their team, while continuing to develop their dribbling, shooting and trick skills. Through this, they have begun to think more tactically and strategically, learning how to read the game and make effective decisions during play. In gymnastics, Year 5 have also grown in confidence when working with a wider range of apparatus, including frames, beams, bars, benches and tables. They have used this equipment to structure and choreograph sequences creatively, rotating and building upon their existing knowledge of balances, jumps and rolls. Students have also exp...
