Over the last few week, Year 5 have been taking part in both athletics and basketball, engaging in a broad range of activities designed to develop their physical skills and deepen their understanding of each sport. In athletics, students have been rotating through a variety of events, including throwing, jumping, relay races, sprint and endurance running. Each station has focused on refining specific techniques, such as improving accuracy and power in throwing, developing rhythm and control in jumping, and enhancing coordination and teamwork during relay activities. Overall, students have been working hard to improve their performance across all areas while also learning to evaluate and adjust their techniques. 4 Grid References

Image
As the weather hasn’t allowed us to collect our data, the children recapped using their 4 grid references  using OS maps of the Isle of Wight. The children were amazing at it and I think we are now ready to learn how to use 6 grid references.

Year 5 started their new topic - all about food. We made a shopping list of foods with our partner - using Je  a ge and Je bois. We conjugated the verb manger. Then we drew a foods in our lunch boxes then told our partner what we had drawn. They then drew what they heard.

How has our local area changed since 1890

Recapping previous learning from last lesson showed all remembered different towns and villages on the island.  Then, they compared and contrasted two different maps of Cowes and East Cowes in 1890 and 2022. In pairs they compared the maps to see how Cowes has changed over the years both physically and how man may have changed it. There were some amazing discussions and the children were able to see that there used to be piers in Cowes as well as a train track. Others recognised that there was more beach in East Cowes years ago but today it has been built on. Using their observations the class then debated what the map would look like in  a hundred years.

Our Local Area

Image
This week the children were introduced to their new topic: Our Local Area They began by looking at the Isle of Wight and locating towns and villages as there are no cities on the Isle of Wight. It was very interesting to see the amount of children that did not know where Ryde was located as well as Newport.  From there they narrowed their view to Cowes. Using an aerial map they identified how the local area was being used currently.
