Year 5 Wheelchair Basketball 2025

Over the last few weeks of Autumn term, Year 5 were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in a series of lessons led by a special guest, Gary Butler. Gary is a qualified wheelchair basketball coach who works in partnership with the Help for Heroes Foundation. He is also a highly regarded wheelchair basketball player and coach within the sport and has been selected to take part in the upcoming GB team trials.

During his visit, Gary shared a range of important skills and techniques linked to wheelchair basketball, as well as demonstrating different approaches to the sport. He also highlighted how the game can be adapted and made accessible for everyone, regardless of ability or physical challenges. This provided students with a valuable insight into inclusive sport and helped to broaden their understanding of teamwork, resilience and respect for others.

This experience has been a key and valuable asset in shaping the students’ attitudes towards sport, inclusivity and empathy. Year 5 showed excellent levels of respect, enthusiasm and engagement throughout the lessons, and many demonstrated clear progression in their skills and understanding of the sport. Overall, it was an inspiring and memorable experience for all involved.
