Year 5 - Spring Term - Gymnastics & Hockey

Image
Year 5 have been strengthening their knowledge and understanding of both gymnastics and hockey this week. In hockey, students have continued to focus on ball and stick control, developing their passing and interception skills. Students showed enthusiasm and growing confidence as they applied these skills in small activities. In gymnastics, Year 5 have been focusing on holding balances independently and in groups, while also making effective use of the apparatus. Students have challenged their core strength, explored different levels and shapes, and built confidence when using equipment safely. These activities have supported pupils in improving their balance, control and overall body awareness.

Racism

This week, the children read the book ‘Mixed’ by Arree Chung. This lovely, simple story demonstrated how three colours were friends, until one day, reds declared they were the best. This caused a division and the colours didn’t mix and they were not very nice about the other colours. One day, blue and yellow found themselves sitting next to each other and they enjoyed their time together. Thus, other colours decided to mix together again and some even got married.  This was a great illustration that everybody should be treated equally, not by the colour of their skin or where they were born. A good lesson for us all! Some great photos were made showing different colours working together.

Identifying risks

This week, the children debated what the definition of risk meant to them. As a group they decided that that risks were essential but at times they could put you in danger as well. We recapped the risk assessments they wrote for their geography trip and looked at why we need to think about the risks for anything we do.  The children were given six scenarios and they discussed them in small groups and identified the risk and then decided on how they would deal with the risk.  A great lesson all.

Applying DADWAVERS

Image
This week, year 5 have been using DADWAVERS  to help them create cohesion in their writing.  The children were given 9 parts of a narrative and they had to read the text and decide which order the text should go in to create cohesion. There were some fantastic discussions in the classroom debating which parts of the text went where as well as justifying their answers.

Year 5 Wheelchair Basketball 2025

Over the last few weeks of Autumn term, Year 5 were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in a series of lessons led by a special guest, Gary Butler. Gary is a qualified wheelchair basketball coach who works in partnership with the Help for Heroes Foundation. He is also a highly regarded wheelchair basketball player and coach within the sport and has been selected to take part in the upcoming GB team trials. During his visit, Gary shared a range of important skills and techniques linked to wheelchair basketball, as well as demonstrating different approaches to the sport. He also highlighted how the game can be adapted and made accessible for everyone, regardless of ability or physical challenges. This provided students with a valuable insight into inclusive sport and helped to broaden their understanding of teamwork, resilience and respect for others. This experience has been a key and valuable asset in shaping the students’ attitudes towards sport, inclusivity and empathy. Year 5...

In History this half term, Year 5 will be looking at the Vikings. This week we talked about some of the reasons they came to Britain, the stereotypical impressions we have and how the Vikings linked to the Saxons and Romans.

French: Christmas

This week, Year 5 found out about how the French celebrate Christmas. We had lots of discussions about similar traditions in other countries too. They then completed 2 different activities based on typical Christmas vocabulary.
