The Land of Roar

 Hawthorn Class have been reading the Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. In this magical book the reader goes on an exciting journey with Arthur and Rose (eleven-year-old twins) to save their grandfather from a magical, dangerous and imaginary world hidden in their attic.  During our day, the children designed a dragon and then described its features. They also, recapped writing sentences with different modal verbs to see the effect of the meaning of their sentences. Then, we read some more of our book. Finally, the children designed their own magical maps on Canva using mapping skills from geography and computing skills.  To top the day off, some parent/grandparents came in to read with the class. 

What are the physical features of Scandinavia?

 Using photos and digital technology the children researched how the physical features are different in all three countries.  Norway is very mountainous, has lots of waterfalls as well as glaciers and fjords.  Whilst Sweden has some mountains to the west but it is mainly flatter. There are lots of forests there and rivers. However, in Denmark the land is flat and is often prone to flooding. Do you know that Denmark is made up of many islands? 

Coat of Hopes

Today, the children were treated to an assembly that introduced to Coat of Hopes which has been created by various people in England.  The coat has been on a walking pilgrimage through the UK. It has been worn by many people as it has travelled over 1900 miles so far. Each patchwork piece symbolises the hopes of people. During assembly, Mr Clark donned the coat and strolled round the hall whilst the children sang the coat song. 

What is Scandinavia?

 This week, the children were introduced to the topic of Scandinavia. They identified the new vocabulary they will be using whilst discussing and evaluating evidence.  The first part of the lesson the children identified the three countries that make up Scandinavia. These include Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Some of the children thought Iceland and Finland might be part of it but they are only Nordic countries.  The children then looked at different pictures of the countries to see what the landscape is like and the climate. 

French: planning a route

 Year 5 revised directions and places. They then practised following written directions, marking out a route. After that they drew  different places in on a map, plotted out a route from their home to school and then had a go at writing the directions for their route. 

Vaping

 This week, the children were really engaged in the discussions about smoking and vaping.  They debated whether it was safe to smoke or vape and why people may choose to.  Miss Amor then passed out some resources ( brown lungs) as well as a prop showing how the lungs work. Then,  they looked at how addictive nicotine is and how it can be hard to give up.  Using a newspaper, the children chose a section of it to answer questions.
